This pipe was used in a ritual performed by the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes (RAOB). The RAOB are a Friendly Society.

The majority of tobacco in Scotland came from North America. Many towns in East Lothian had a tobacconist shop.

This clay pipe was made in one of Leith's several pipeworks, probably W Christie's, which survived until 1962. With its long stem it is a scarce, survivor of a once ubiquitous style.
