Details
This is the third of four medals (or jewels as they are known) awarded to members of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes (RAOB). It is awarded when a member or "Brother" has attained the rank of Knight Order of Merit (KOM). The jewel itself shows a buffalo head upon a Maltese Cross. The ribbon has an enamel brooch with the letters KOM (interlinked) inscribed on it. The dates for 1st Degree and 2nd Degree inscribed on the bars at the top and bottom of the ribbon show when this brother was raised up to these ranks before becoming the 3rd degree that the jewel itself signifies. It comes in its own jewel case. The jewels are bought from Parry’s in England. The Brothers either buy them themselves or are presented them by the lodge.
This is from the Grey Horse Lodge. This was a Musselburgh Lodge that met in the Grey Horse Pub in Musselburgh from 1920 to 1961. . Little is known of the Grey Horse Lodge. It is likely that its demise is due in part to the success of Musselburgh's other lodge - Honestas Lodge. This medal belonged to Brother John W Law. It is quite an old one and compared to the modern day ones is a different design. Different jewels belong to different lodges and Brothers can buy other lodge jewels when they are visiting them, for example on holiday. In the Armed Forces they also had badges for the lodges. Although the jewel might be different today the case it comes in is still the same.
It has been argued that the roots of Buffaloism can be traced to around the time of George IV. It was initially founded by travelling players (actors and entertainers) in England to benefit their brethren. The organisation still plays a relevant role in society, undertaking a wide range of charitable and benevolent works.
