This jewel was issued to Bro. F. M. Gordon of Unitas Lodge. It marks the centenary of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes from 1866 to 1966. The Latin text on the jewel reads 'CORUNUM - VIA UNA - SIC ITUR AD ASTRA - ANIMO ET FIDE'.

The Unitas Lodge is the only lodge still in existence in East Lothian. There used to be one in Dunbar, one in Prestonpans called Preston Tower and two in Musselburgh called Honestas Lodge and Grey Horse Lodge. There are four lodges currently in Edinburgh who report to the Provincial Lodge in Edinburgh who in turn reports to the Grand Lodge in England. However, the Unitas Lodge, as the only one in the area is out on a limb and therefore it reports directly to the Grand Lodge.

It has been argued that the roots of Buffaloism can be traced to around the time of George IV. It was initially founded by travelling players (actors and entertainers) in England to benefit their brethren. The organisation still plays a relevant role in society, undertaking a wide range of charitable and benevolent works.
