Details
In the Edwardian period and earlier, holidaymakers at East Lothian resorts could hire horse-drawn char-a-bancs from local coaching businesses or hotels for day trips and picnics. This group of excursionists are dressed and equipped for a holiday.
This photograph shows a typical group on a day trip in East Lothian. Most of the younger women are wearing straw 'boater' hats and one of the men at the front is carrying a set of bagpipes. They are posed beside a large horse drawn wagon with bench seats, a 'char-a-banc.
