Details
Although Belfield's of Prestonpans enjoyed a reputation for their production of teapots and tablewares, the pottery also produced a wide range of functional domestic crockery, such as this piedish.
This is an earthenware piedish with a transparent glaze on a buff body. The oval flat rimmed dish has evidence of stilt marks (used in the firing process) on both upper and lower faces. The base has two impressed marks '15' and PRESTONPANS FIREPROOF.
Belfield's Pottery was the last survivor of the Prestonpans ceramic industry. It operated for over a century on a site near the west end of the town, beside the seaside. The site had also been used for a works making industrial acids and basic chemicals and had been a saltworks before that.
