Pioneer Mangle: Accession No. 1998.107

This mangle was kept at Forth Street, North Berwick, in an outhouse which was once a laundry. It continued to be used even after the family bought a washing machine: every summer it wrung out swimming costumes when the family returned from the nearby beach.

A bench top mangle, consisting of a cast iron frame with two spring loaded wood rollers, which are tensioned by an overhead screw and turned by a wheel mounted on the right hand side. The wheel is marked RD 251261, the frame PIONEER 46.L. and the spring bar JOHN WIGHTMAN NORTH BERWICK, all in moulded lettering.
