Details
This tool was used at Prestongrange Brick and Tile Works. It was used to cut a series of parallel grooves onto the outside of the shafts of drainage pipes, to provide a grip for mortar when the pipes were laid.
This is a boxy tool consisting of two wood blocks fixed to two iron plates. Between the plates an iron spindle carries a hollow rod with 4 discs set orthogonal to the main axis.
Prestongrange Brickworks was begun as a facility supplying drainage tiles to Prestongrange Estate in the early nineteenth century. When a colliery was sunk nearby and abundant fireclay tapped, the works developed on industrial lines and made everything from chimney cans and bricks to decorative garden pieces.
