Two fisher-girls: Accession No. 2001.241.30

The natural beauty of the countryside around East Lothian has inspired many artists over the centuries. This pastoral scene was painted by the Edinburgh artist, William Marshall Brown, (RSA, RSW, 1863 - 1936).

This oil on canvas painting depicts two girls from an East Lothian fishing community, walking along a beach, carrying wicker baskets. The girls are perhaps on their way to collect some small shellfish to bait the fishermen's lines.

William Marshall Brown RSA, RSW, was born in Edinburgh in 1863. He travelled throughout Britain and Europe producing oil and watercolour paintings. He particularly enjoyed figurative and landscape painting.
