This painting currently hangs on public display in East Lothian Council Headquarters in Haddington. It was painted by William Darling McKay, who was born in Gifford. East Lothian Council Museums Service is fortunate to have a small collection of McKay's work.
This oil painting depicts a gentle pastoral scene, of a man on his horse, driving cattle over the coastal marshes. A vast, evening lit, blue sky dominates the upper three quarters of the painting.
William Darling McKay was born in Gifford in 1844. His love of nature and the beauty of East Lothian's countryside is reflected in the pastoral artwork that he produced. He died in Edinburgh in 1924.
