Details
This unusual work has been made in coloured wax on paper in the style of a stitched sampler. It was probably made as an engagement gift - it features entwined hearts and love-birds. The design was made using coloured wax applied with a small knife or a needle.
This is a glazed, wax painting in a painted wood frame. The image contains delicately worked trees, birds, geometric designs and hearts in different colours, partially obscured by darkening and dirt. The maker has inscribed her name along the bottom BETTY ANDERSON IN HADINTON.
Until the later nineteenth century many girls did not follow the same syllabus as boys, if they went to school at all. Instead, their education concentrated on domestic crafts and skills. Most produced a sampler worked in a variety of stitches to demonstrate their proficiency.
