A flask that belonged to Jimmy Douther were donated in 2005 by his son Jim. Jimmy was born in Wallyford in 1895 and died at Prestonpans in 1978. Jimmy used all of these things whilst he worked at the Prestonlinks Pit, from the 1930s until his retirement at the age of 65. He started work at 14 years of age at Wallyford Mine (photo of group). Jimmy was very musical, performing from a young age. At eighteen he was playing piano at the Portobello Central Picture House and he played in bands thoughout his life. Jimmy even performed for the first class passengers on a ship (photo) on his way to Canada to find work after the 1927 strike. Jimmy also gave music lessons after he returned to Scotland in the 1930s. He retired from the Links Pit at 65. He then worked in the (redundant) Pit Head Baths at Prestongrange, breeding Beagle dogs for the local vet. He also trained two Trotting Horses.
