Details
The mug has a moulded border form and is decorated with the pattern of an exotic bird perched on a fence alongside a rock from which flowers spring. The "bird and fence" pattern appears to be relatively common on West Pans Porcelain.
This moulded Mug or Tankard was almost certainly made in West Pans. The village of West Pans lies 1¼ miles East North East of Musselburgh, encompassing the rocky foreshore and Saltpans from which the name is derived.
It is likely to have been made by the potter William Littler. Littler was working in West Pans in the 1760s. William Littler, was considered the pioneer potter of West Pans during this period.
