This object is a patten, a particular kind of horseshoe to stop horses sinking in soft ground in wet weather. It was used at the Tyninghame Estate near Dunbar, which is owned to this day by the Earl of Haddington.

Description

a horseshoe with a possibly leather covering on top with metal studs on bottom for grip, on bottom left and right (partially obscured) of leather covering are the words 'COLE'S PATENT' in a circular arrangement, in centre are the letters 'PAT' with other letters worn away, as well as various studs to fix the covering on, on the top is also a loose piece of rusted metal to fix the foot into the patten and a screw to adjust this. at the other end is a raised half circle that would have also secured the horse's foot in place
