Details
This baby bonnet is made from white cotton material and dates from the late Victorian period.
This baby bonnet is made from embroidered white cotton, known as whitework. Fine stitches depict flower and leaf patterns around the border of the bonnet. The circular crown of the cap is edged with a small frill. Three sets of thin drawstrings ensure a snug, secure fit on an infant's head.
The tradition of sewing or knitting in preparation for the arrival of a baby has changed little over the centuries. Items, such as finely stitched bonnets were lovingly made and given as gifts to the parents of a new child.
