Details
As well as a wide range of bricks, pipes and other industrial fireclay products, Prestongrange Brick and Tile Works made a number of items for garden or decorative use. This plaster mould was used at the Brickworks.
This is one half of a plaster mould in the form of a resting dog. The animal's features and coat is detailed, as is the form of a plinth for the resulting model. There are four sockets lined with fireclay, used to position the other half of the mould.
Articles manufactured from fireclay were made at Prestongrange from the 1870s when consistent supplies of the raw material could be extracted from the nearby colliery. The brick and tile works continued in production until 1975, 13 years after the closure of the pit, before closing on economic grounds.
