Details
As well as a wide range of bricks, pipes and other industrial fireclay products, Prestongrange Brick and Tile Works made a number of items for garden or decorative use. This plaster mould was used at the Brickworks.
Articles manufactured from fireclay were made at Prestongrange from the 1870s when consistent supplies of the raw material could be extracted from the nearby colliery. The brick and tile works continued in production until 1975, 13 years after the closure of the pit, before closing on economic grounds.
Pictured is the other half of this plaster mould (Accession Number 1999.79.1).
Description
Description
This is the broken off right half of one half of a plaster mould in the form of a resting dog. It shows the dogs back end and legs. The animal's features and coat is detailed, as is the form of a plinth for the resulting model. There are bumps lined with fireclay, used to slot it into the holes on the other half of the mould. This half of the plaster would have been broken to open it up once fired.
