Rattle

This silver rattle was an expensive gift for a Victorian baby. It has bells and a whistle but might be considered to fine a piece for an infant to play with unsupervised.

Silver baby's rattle with whistle at extremity and 8 bells in two tiers, engraved with simple patterns. There is a metal loop for hanging under the whistle and an engraved 'L' with faint letters or numerals above the pink coral handle.

Few children of the nineteenth century would have the luxury of any rattle, let alone a sophisticated toy like this.
