Souvenir mug: Accession No. 1377

Souvenir commemorative mug for the coronation of King George the VI and Queen Elizabeth.

This mug was made in commemoration of King George VI and Elizabeth's coronation. The cameo portrait of the Royal couple is supported by heraldic elephant and figure of St George. It has a stylised handle in the shape of a mythical beast grasping an acanthus leaf. Its transfer print is taken from a design by the artist, Dame Laura Knight.

Souvenir ceramics are still currently popular and collected all over the United Kingdom in order to commemorate special public events. This mug's transfer print was designed by Dame Laura Knight (1877-1970); a British born painter, particularly known for her paintings of ballet and circus life. The images of the dragon and heraldic elephant on this mug reflect her interest in painting animals.
