Cow Creamer: Accession No. 1480 + 1481

Although this pair of creamers (cream jugs) have been attributed to the North British Pottery in Glasgow, similar items were being made at many Scottish potteries including those at Prestonpans; hence, they have also been attributed to C Belfield and Sons. In the absence of maker's marks it can be difficult to say where they originated.

This is a pair of milk jugs in the shape of cows. They have a shiny black 'Jetware' glaze (entirely covering the red earthenware body) with gold decoration around their horns and eyes. Each jug also has a small lid.

Prestonpans in East Lothian has an ancient connection with the manufacture of pottery. It had readily available local supplies of clay and of coal, and therefore had access to two of the essential raw ingredients for the industry.
