Belfield's pottery flourished in Prestonpans from the early nineteenth century until around the time of World War II. From the first, they produced a wide range of articles but later concentrated on teapots, for which they won a wide reputation.
This teapot has a conical body with a tapering spout and curved, tailed handle. It has been decorated with a rich, uneven toffee brown glaze ('Rockingham'), which is crazed, or finely cracked. The lid is finished with a handle fashioned as sitting figure.
This teapot, with the 'granny' on the handle was a very popular style, properly known as 'Serbia', after the figurative handle on the lid and a connection made with events in Europe leading to the First World War.
