Details
This is one of the many kinds of teapots produced by Belfield's Pottery in Prestonpans. The firm registered several of their designs, which today enables collectors and researchers place unmarked pieces.
This earthenware teapot is shaped in the form of a tapering sheaf of bamboo stalks, bound by straw, and the lid represents ends of bamboo shoots. The handle and grip on the lid are modelled as bamboo segments. The teapot has a rich, treacly brown or 'Rockingham' glaze. The maker is named in an oval mark on the base.
Belfield's pottery flourished in Prestonpans from the early nineteenth century until around the time of World War II. They produced a wide range of articles, but later concentrated on teapots for which they won a wide reputation.
