Details
This jug is decorated with the name Charles Belfield, the founder of Prestonpans' longest surviving pottery. However, it is unlikely that the jug was made locally (around Prestonpans) and it may have been some kind of presentation piece.
This is a porcelain jug with a very white, bulbous body and an extravagantly flared spout. The curved handle is decorated with curlicues and gold lining. A gold inscription reads CHARLES BELFIELD, surrounded by foliate gold prints.
Charles Belfield founded his own pottery in the 1830s at Prestonpans. He was succeeded by several generations of his descendants, including another Charles. The works closed around the time of World War II.
