Details
In common with many other works, Prestongrange Brick and Fireclay Works produced garden wares in some quantity. This tree-stump planter base is part of a range of decorative pieces typical of these manufactures.
This is a ceramic planter or bird-bath base. The body has been shaped to resemble a stump of wood. The effect is enhanced by using brown and green glazes. There are three drain-holes in the base and the top has a recessed ledge for the missing top.
Suburban expansion of Scotland's towns and cities was accompanied by an increase in demand for garden wares. Catalogues, inventories and a few marked examples show that Scotland's industrial brickworks could turn out a wide range of pots, planters, furniture and path-edging tiles.
