Robert Hogg Bell

This bell was probably made to be used in a Haddington Church or school; it carries a dedication to 'glory the light of God'. It was cast in 1642 by Robert Hog(g).

This is a bronze bell with an iron clapper made from a slug of metal on a spike. The bell was cast with text in a band around the shoulder: ROBERTUS*HOG*ME*FECIT*SOLI*DEO*GLORIA and the date 1642. The head is pierced to carry a short bar.

Bells were used throughout the medieval period and in to modern times by churches, schools and town councils. Until the advent of cheap watches most of the population of a town like Haddington would take their time from the town bell; the council employed a bellman as early as 1542.
