Coronation Arch: Accession No. 1995.19

The towns and villages of East Lothian celebrated the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in traditional manner. The burghs granted a public holiday and there were parades and Church services on the day itself. Streets and shops were decorated, the latter with arches and bunting.

This is a black and white photograph printed on gloss paper. It was taken in Victoria Road North Berwick, looking south to the Law. The main subject is a decorated arch over the street with text E GOD SAVE THE QUEEN R.

Traditionally, floral and greenwood arches were erected over the routes taken by important personages visiting localities in East Lothian. For the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, the tradition was reinterpreted with structures such as this in Victoria Street, North Berwick.
