Details
This group photograph shows members of the Ancient Order of Shepherds at North Berwick. Annual subscriptions to the Order supported ill or pensioner members and their families before the introduction of universal old age pensions and sickness benefits.
This sepia photograph was taken at North Berwick Bowling Club around 1900 and shows sixteen men wearing sashes, robes, hats and aprons associated with offices in the Order of Shepherds. Some of the men are carrying batons and others crooks or staffs topped with symbolic figures.
The Ancient Order of Shepherds was a Friendly Society. It separated from its parent order, the Ancient Order of Foresters, in 1886. Office bearers were entitled to wear and carry exclusive regalia and symbols on public occasions.
