Details
This photograph shows the frontage of a confectionery shop in North Berwick. The shop was owned and run by two sisters, Jane and Maggie Gullane.
In this black and white photograph, Maggie Gullane stands, hands on hips, in the doorway of her confectionery shop. The shop window, to her left is full of boxes of chocolates and jars of boiled sweets. Notice the adverts for Cadbury's chocolate and Fry's Cream Chocolate that are painted onto the window glass.
'Sweetie' shops catered for the sweet tooth of local people, selling 'quarters' of boiled sweets and bars and boxes of chocolates. Such specialised shops are uncommon nowadays; the supermarket 'pick and mix' and variety of confectionery items available in local shops has forced many confectionery shops out of business.
