A Napoleonic period military establishment: Accession No. 1995.892

The schoolmaster of West Barns, Reverend George Johnston, drew this plan of Dunbar's Napoleonic barracks complex for the Depute Barrack-Master, Thomas Hume. The barracks were situated between Dunbar and Belhaven.

This is an ink and water colour scale plan of a barracks layout, the CAVALRY AND INFANTRY BARRACKS at Dunbar, 1800 to 1815. Individual buildings are given in some detail and their uses indicated. The work was by George Johnston for Thomas Hume, both named below the painting.

Scottish Volunteer Regiments spent short periods on active service during the Napoleonic Wars at Dunbar Barracks. The complex was a temporary establishment, but of considerable scale. The buildings were afterwards sold and re-erected at Belhaven as a cloth factory. Conserved by SMC staff with the assistance of the Bank of Scotland Archive Conservation Fund.
