Details
This jug was made for the Ancient Fraternity of Free Gardeners of East Lothian. The Haddington based society was originally an association of practising gardeners but operated later as a conventional friendly society: subscriptions were used to support the Fraternity's sick and pensioner members.
This earthenware jug is decorated with three identical olive coloured transfer prints depicting a gardener at ease with his foot on a spade, under the branches of a tree. Below the image is an inscription GARDENERS SOCIETY HADDINGTON.
The Free Gardeners of East Lothian were one of Scotland's oldest Friendly (or mutual) Societies and accumulated memorabilia such as this jug. When wound up in 1953 surviving memorabilia was distributed amongst the remaining members.
