Details
John Fowler and Company of Prestonpans was closed in the early 1960s after being taken over. The brewery had a modern bottling plant, which was stripped out and used by the purchasers.
This is a moulded glass beer bottle with a crown top. There is an oval paper label on the side, printed in orange and black, with a trademark in the centre (Preston Cross) and text PRESTONPANS ALE in bold black lettering. The bottle is unopened.
In the eighteenth century there was a number of small breweries in Prestonpans; in the nineteenth century most of these disappeared leaving John Fowler and Company, who established a nationwide reputation for their strong ales or 'Wee Heavy'.
