Painting of Haddington High Street: Accession No. 1997.6.5

This watercolour painting details the frontages of two small scale local shops in Haddington High Street during the late 1940s.

This painting illustrates the frontage of number thirty-two Haddington High Street, which in 1947, housed bakery and plumbing businesses above which were some domestic flats.

Dorothea Nimmo Smith was born in Haddington in 1889. A keen amateur artist, she painted and sketched many scenes from her surroundings in and around Haddington. A large collection of her work is held by East Lothian Council's Museum Service. The collection is a rich visual source for those who are interested in recent local history.
