Details
This painting shows the junction of Haddington High Street with the Hardgate and Sidegate Roads. This area is known as the 'custom stone' area, as the town's custom stone was situated near here.
The street junction depicted in this watercolour painting is situated at the east end of Haddington High Street. Some shop names are visible, including that of, 'Haigh Photography'.
Haddington's 'custom stone' was conveniently located at the divergence of four of the town's major thoroughfares. This made levying charges on any taxable or contraband goods entering or leaving the town a straightforward task. The ancient, dark whinstone 'custom stone' is still situated at this junction, in the garden of the George Hotel.
