Details
This certificate was made especially for the recipient George Rattray, who had served 25 years as the secretary of the Ancient Fraternity of Free Gardeners of East Lothian. His photograph forms the centre-piece of the decoration.
This is a hand made ink and pencil certificate. The design is heraldic, with gardening symbols and a floral and fruit swag surrounding a cartouche with a portrait photograph. A text in a representation of a scroll identifies the recipient.
The Ancient Fraternity of Free Gardeners was a Friendly Society, affiliated to similar bodies across Scotland. During its more than 300 year existence, the Society rewarded long-serving office-bearers on several occasions.
