Details
This view is of an old fishermen's landing place lying on the east side of Dunbar Castle. The artist has shown several clinker-built fishing yawls at the shore with more following a winding passage through off-shore rocks.
This is an oil painting on canvas in a gilt wood and plaster frame. The subject is a rocky creek with figures and fishing boats under the lee of a ruined castle extending along rocks across the entire background.
This view vanished in 1842 when the seaward portion of the castle was blasted to create an entrance for a new harbour built on the site of the creek in the foreground. It was a popular subject around this time and several versions exist; some, possibly, made at a later date.
