Details
Although presented to John MacIntyre personally, the size of this portrait suggests that the intention behind its making was public display. The dedication reads: Presented to John MacIntyre Esq. JP. In recognition of long and generous service rendered by him as Provost of North Berwick. December 1920. James Allison ARSA.
This is a large portrait oil painting on canvas in a glazed gilt wood and plaster frame with a dedication plaque on the lower edge. The subject is a suited man wearing a chain and medallion, sitting in a chair draped with a red, fur-trimmed robe.
John MacIntyre, a prosperous chemist and mineral water manufacturer, became provost of North Berwick in June 1899 on the death of the previous incumbent. He held office for many years when the town was at the height of its popularity as a holiday resort.
