Friendly Society Banner, being conserved in 2000: Accession No. 2001.329

Pinkie Hope Lodge, No29, Independent United Order of Scottish Mechanics clearly showed their affiliation on their late Victorian banner, which displays symbols standing for science and industry as well as the concept of fraternity. The text below makes it plain: LOVE & UNITY, SECRESY (sic), FIDELITY, BENEVOLENCE, HONOUR & TRUTH.

Pinkie Hope Lodge, No29, Independent United Order of Scottish Mechanics clearly showed their affiliation on the reverse of their late Victorian banner. The central panel is the arms of the Hopes of Pinkie, on whose lands were the chemical, salt and brick works that employed most of the membership.

This is a silk marching banner with a painted design. The detail includes a ribbon strapline with foliate tracery over a large heraldic panel including a coat of arms with fraternal and industrial symbols, and a pair of putti holding an open book. This work was conserved with grant-aid from the Scottish Museum Council.

Several branches of the Independent United Order of Scottish Mechanics were established during the last part of the nineteenth century at communities in the west of East Lothian and Musselburgh, which all had major industrial works. The order was a friendly society, not a trades union, providing benefits to the membership from subscriptions and investments.
