Details
This is a large shiny brown teapot. Its handle and spout are modelled after tree branches or twigs. This is a fully functional, yet decoratively interesting item of domestic ware.
This teapot was probably made at Prestonpans Pottery; it matches a design produced by this pottery in the nineteenth century. However, other Scottish potteries are known to have made similar wares.
Prestonpans in East Lothian has an ancient connection with the manufacture of pottery. It had readily available local supplies of clay and of coal, and therefore had access to two of the raw ingredients for the industry. Easy access to markets and seaways were also important in the location of the East Lothian potteries.
