Collars made from lace or crochet added a fresh, delicate finish to any dress or blouse. This beautiful example comes from a collection owned by Miss Annie Young, who lived in North Berwick.

This hand made crocheted collar is made from white cotton thread. When attached to a dress or blouse it would give an attractive square neckline and triangular peaked front detail. The collar was detachable and may have been reused a number of times.

Throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, proficiency in needlework and handicrafts such as crochet, were highly valued skills. Indeed, such skills were largely considered essential parts of a lady's education.
