Ceramic sink, small: Accession Number 2000.261

This small sink was made at Prestongrange Brick and Tile Works. The plant was capable of making all manner of bricks, pipes and tiles as well as a wide range of ceramics for domestic and workplace uses.

This is a small fireclay vessel or sink. It is rectangular with a drainage hole and below the rim at one end are three slots for overflow. The interior is coated with a yellowish glaze.

Prestongrange Brickworks was begun as a facility supplying drainage tiles to Prestongrange Estate in the early nineteenth century. When a colliery was sunk nearby and abundant fireclay tapped, the works developed on industrial lines and the number of products increased.
