This is a bottle containing 'Oil of Salt'. Salt was manufactured by the Scottish Salt Company at Prestonpans until 1959. Oil of Salt was a by product of the salt manufacturing process and was used as a liniment for rubbing down horses, or in this case as a 'Tonic for Tired Feet'.
The life of a salter was harsh. Sea salt was made by boiling sea water in huge pans until the brine evaporated. The process was repeated several times and would have been extremely hot and smelly, and the fumes bad for the lungs.
